Mission Statement
Champions for Children dba Family Nurturing Center of Tampa builds stronger families in the Tampa Bay region through its child abuse prevention and family education programs.
About Us
Champions for Children (Champions) is a leader in providing high quality, research-based education and prevention services to children and families in Hillsborough County. Our wide array of programs and services has been accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Children and Family Service Organizations (COA) since 2004. Recognized by national early childhood organizations, Champions for Children has been designated as the Brazelton Touchpoints ™ Site of Tampa Bay and as Florida’s Parents as Teachers State Office. Champions specifically targets its services to pregnant women and children age birth to 5 and their families by providing research & evidence based programming:
- Improve birth outcomes for pregnant women
- Support healthy social-emotional development in infants and children
- Build parental self-confidence
- Educate and support parents to form nurturing relationships with their children
- Ensure children are developmentally on-track and ready to learn, and
- Ultimately improve the well-being of young children and families in our community.
Program & Services
- A Better Childbirth (abc) Program offers comprehensive prenatal education services to help prepare families for birth and their new role as parents. Services include Childbirth Education, Newborn Care, and Breastfeeding Basics. Lactation counseling is offered in one-to-one sessions and community Baby Cafés.
- Baby Bungalow is an early childhood resource center for families with young children that offers wildly popular parent/child developmental playgroups, parent workshops and ongoing child developmental screenings at multiple locations across Hillsborough County.
- Children’s Board Family Resource Centers – East County & North Tampa are fun, inviting places for families to come on a daily basis. The Centers seek to strengthen and empower families and communities so they can foster the best possible development of children with a focus on child development, health and safety. New residents to the area find that the centers offer the opportunity to meet new friends and gain support in re-establishing their families in Hillsborough County.
- Family Involvement Connections provides technical assistance and training to licensed family childcare home providers and partners with them to encourage families to interact on a regular basis in their child’s early learning. Our family friendly Books, Blocks & Balls developmental screening events are a fun way for families to learn about their child’s development and receive activities that will help their child reach their full developmental potential.
- Family Learning Center is a Gold Seal developmental childcare center offering individualized care to children. Nurturing Parenting® Program classes and support groups are offered to mothers who are receiving services for substance use disorders.
- Fathers Resource and Networking Center (FRANC) serves as a hub for community-wide fatherhood initiatives and programs. Our Boot Camp for New Dads, Who’s the Man?! fathers only developmental playgroups and Nurturing Dads Course are available to all fathers, father figures and families.
- Healthy Families is an evidence-based intensive home visiting service that promotes positive parent-child interaction and childhood development among families of newborns in Hillsborough County for the prevention of child abuse and neglect.
- The Kids on the Block is a “Troupe of Educational Puppets” designed to teach 3rd graders to recognize child abuse and use the “NO, GO & TELL” safety rule to get help from responsible adults. 4th graders learn to recognize & report bullying and to have empathy and respect for others. This valuable educational experience provided to more than 20,000 students annually in Hillsborough County.
- Layla’s House is a parent-child resource center in the heart of Sulphur Springs that offers fun educational programs, resources and activities that enhance positive early childhood development and provides support from pregnancy through Kindergarten entry.
- Parents as Teachers is internationally recognized evidence based early childhood parent education and family support program. Certified Parent Educators provide in-home parent education and family support to families from pregnancy through a child’s transition into kindergarten. We help parents understand what to expect during each stage of development so that they can capture the teachable moments in everyday life to enhance their child’s language development, intellectual growth, social development and motor skills.
